Slave owners had many justifications for why holding people in bondage was acceptable. From the idea that African Americans were a lesser race who needed taking care of by white patriarchs to the economic justification, slave owners were always trying to find new ways to dispute those who disagreed with their choice to hold others in captivity. Charleston slave holders were no exception in attempting to find justifications to mask their guilt.

Series: Question Box. The question is “What are the ‘Christian rules’ for dating? Whenever I get a question like that I’m not quite sure how I should respond. My experience is that for many of us, the most valuable advise deals with things not specific to the Bible: brush your teeth, dress nicely, be on time, don’t talk the whole time, take her to a decent restaurant. However, I think the questioner has something else in mind.

We might state the question this way: “What does the Bible say about dating? Dating is not an institution the Bible recognizes at all. The only male-female relationships spoken of in Scripture are brother-sister, father-daughter, son-mother, and husband-wife. What that means is not that the Bible is irrelevant for those wishing to date, but rather that we will have to approach the matter principially.

The New Testament is a collection of early Christian literature, which together with the Old The books of the NT were written in Greek, and they date from c A.D. It cannot be bound to any concrete place or church institution, but it is.

How old is the institution? For thousands of years before that, most anthropologists believe, families consisted of loosely organized groups of as many as 30 people, with several male leaders, multiple women shared by them, and children. As hunter-gatherers settled down into agrarian civilizations, society had a need for more stable arrangements. The first recorded evidence of marriage ceremonies uniting one woman and one man dates from about B.

Over the next several hundred years, marriage evolved into a widespread institution embraced by the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. But back then, marriage had little to do with love or with religion. What was it about, then? If wives failed to produce offspring, their husbands could give them back and marry someone else. Excavative methodologies of biblical studies may be employed to date biblical law: legal ideas or presupposes different legal and socio-economic institutions.

Early marriage was borne of ancient societies’ need to secure a safe environment in which to breed, handle the granting of property rights, and protect bloodlines. Ancient Hebrew law required a man to become the husband of a deceased brother’s widow. But even in these early times, marriage was much about love and desire as it was social and economic stability. In its roundness, the engagement ring, a custom dating back to the Ancient Rome, is believed to represent eternity and everlasting union.

It was once believed a vein or nerve ran directly from the ‘ring’ finger of the left hand to the heart. Many other modern day marriage traditions have their origins in these ancient times. Newly-weds are said to have aided fertility by drinking a brew made from honey during certain lunar phases and it is this tradition from which we derive the origins of the word ‘honeymoon’.

Understanding of marriage contrasted greatly from culture to culture. Some cultures viewed the institution as endogamous men were required to marry within their own social group, family, clan, or tribe , exogamous marrying outside the geographical region or social group or polygamous allowing men to take more than one bride. Polygamy was formally banned towards the end of the Roman Empire with laws against adultery, fornication and other relationships outside a monogamous lifelong covenant.

The seeds of modern marriage were sowed here and they extended into the modern Western world. In European nations, marriage was traditionally considered a civil institution.

The same principle holds true for women who find loving and responsible husbands. Marriages are not only a basis for happiness, they offer us longer and better-quality lives.
